EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
