PSG Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck twice late to seize a shock lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
